January 2013 Newsletter: Diabetes and Prediabetes

January 1st, 2013

The Next Epidemic is Here!

Your Best New Year’s Resolution:
Balance Your Blood Sugar

  • 25.8 million children and adults in the U.S. (8.3%) have diabetes
  • 79 million have prediabtes (1 out of 3 Americans)

Diabetes is a condition of having high blood sugar or hyperglycemia. Typical signs of diabetes are frequent urination, excessive thirst, and increased appetite.  Everyone needs to pay attention to their lifestyle habits and their diet in order to make sure blood sugar levels are normal. Having low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) does not negate the risk of having diabetes.

Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 - the body does not produce insulin.
  • Type 1.5 - latent autoimmune diabetes with the presence of auto-antibodies in the blood and adult onset.
  • Type 2 - known as non-insulin-dependent, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells cannot absorb and utilize the insulin (insulin resistance). Type 2 diabetes is the most common.
  • Type 3 - known as brain diabetes; protein plaque resulting from elevated blood sugar in the brain resulting in memory loss, Alzheimer, and dementia.
  • Gestational diabetes - occurs during pregnancy and usually returns to normal after delivery.

How to Determine if you are Diabetic or Prediabetic:

The Hemoglobin A1c test (blood test)
- at least 6.5% means diabetes
- between 5.7% and 5.99% means prediabetes
- less than 5.7% means normal

FPG (fasting plasma glucose) test
- at least 126 mg/dl means diabetes
- between 100 mg/dl and 125.99 mg/dl means prediabetes
- less than 100 mg/dl means normal

OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test)
- at least 200 mg/dl means diabetes
- between 140 and 199.9 mg/dl means prediabetes
- less than 140 mg/dl means normal

Causes of Diabetes

  • Eating too many carbohydrates (breads, pastas, crackers), fast food, sugary foods and beverages, especially those with high fructose corn syrup
  • Eating too many calories per day
  • Eating too little vegetables, fiber, and protein
  • Skipping meals
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Environmental toxins
  • Microbes such as viruses and yeast
  • Genetics

Symptoms and Complications of Diabetes:

  • Weight gain around the waistline
  • Diabetic neuropathy - nerve damage to arms, legs, and other parts of the body creating numbness, tingling, burning or sharp sensations
  • Candidiasis (yeast overgrowth)
  • Frozen shoulder and carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Vision problems - blurry vision, double vision, glaucoma, cataracts, and blindness
  • Foot problems - hammertoes, bunions, claw-foot, corns
  • High blood pressure and heart problems
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetic stiff hand syndrome or limited mobility in the hands
  • Edema - fluid retention
  • Skin tags
  • Hair loss
  • Fatigue, confusion, memory loss
  • Infections - slow healing of wounds, urinary tract infection, periodontal infections
  • Depression/anxiety
  • Hearing loss
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Insomnia

What Can I Do?

  • Omit fast food, refined carbohydrates, gluten, fruit juices and soda, alcohol, sugary snacks, and desserts from your diet.
  • Eat a diet high in vegetables (60%), protein (20%), gluten-free grains (15% or not at all until sugar levels are balanced), nuts/fruit/beans (5%, stay off all juices except fresh green vegetable).
  • Eat three smaller meals a day and snack in between.
  • Do my 90 day program as set forth in my book “The Candida Cure.”
  • Exercise at least 4 times a week - walking is a great place to start; you don’t need a gym membership.
  • Supplements such as Glysen and Protoglysen from Apex Energetics or Blood Sugar Support by Vitacost help with insulin resistance and high blood sugar. (To purchase Apex products, call 800-736-4381 and set up a patient account using code P2017. Glysen and Protoglysen are best taken together if you already have diabetes. Glysen is good for prediabetics and insulin resistance. Gluco abX is good for those with hypoglycemia.)
  • Take probiotics, vitamin E, vitamin C, multi vitamin/mineral without iron, and fish oil.
  • Take 1 tbsp. of ground flaxseed meal and put into  10 ounces of water, or into a smoothie, or sprinkle onto food.

October 2012 Newsletter: Leaky Gut And Genetically Modified Organisms

October 30th, 2012

What Is Leaky Gut And Why Is it On the Rise?
Leaky gut is a condition where the intestinal lining of the gastrointestinal tract becomes more permeable allowing undigested food particles, microbes (candida, parasites, bacteria, viruses), chemicals, and other inflammatory agents to enter the bloodstream. Leaky gut contributes to many symptoms and conditions: allergies, food sensitivities, fatigue, headaches, skin conditions, autoimmune diseases, anxiety/depression, Alzheimer’s, and cancer.

Why Is Leaky Gut On The Rise?
Because of the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Genetically modified foods are one of the main culprits to causing leaky gut and continue to dominate our food supply. Take a look at the 10 list of GM foods, specifically animal feed. Livestock and fish being at the top of the list means it is virtually impossible to avoid eating GMOs.

The top 10 GMOs are:

  • Animal Feed
  • Salmon
  • Corn
  • Soybeans
  • Oils (cottonseed and canola)
  • Sugar Beets
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Squash
  • Rice

Research is becoming quite clear that GMOs, which are laden with herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides are disrupting our DNA. Everything from leaky gut, infertility and sterility in female and males, to autoimmune diseases and cancer are increasing at alarming rates.

Even though 50 countries around the world require genetically modified foods to be labeled, the United States still refuses mandatory labeling for GMOs. The companies who manufacture the chemicals and genetically modified seeds stand to lose profits if GMO labeling is required and are spending millions of dollars to defeat GMO initiatives or to keep them off the ballot altogether.

What is the US government response? At a world Codex (a collection of internationally recognized standards, codes of practice, guidelines and other recommendations relating to foods, food production and food safety) meeting the FDA argued that “the average consumer was too ignorant to recognize the difference between a GMO labeled food and a non GMO labeled food and that they would make the wrong choice.” Scott Tips, J.D. (GMO Ticking Time Bomb, documentary)

Genetically Modified Foods to Help with Overpopulation
Genetically modified were crops were developed to yield more crops and increase profits for farmers, especially those in Third World nations. The opposite is happening. In India, over 250,000 farmers have committed suicide because they can not sustain the costs of maintaining their genetically modified crops, which have also been modified to yield only one crop per seed.

WHAT CAN I DO?
The way you can make a change is to educate yourself, your family, and your friends about what is really happening to our food supply, crops, and livestock feeding. It is through education, social networking, and voting that we can make a difference. If we can start a revolution through Facebook and Twitter we can demand better farming practices and the use of organic organic seeds and crops.

VOTE
This November in the state of California you will have the opportunity to vote on Prop. 37 which requires mandatory labeling of GM foods.
Please vote to pass Prop. 37 this November if you live in California!

There are two great documentaries I highly recommend to educate yourself, your family and friends about the danger of GMOs. One is about 15 minutes, the other is 85 minutes.

IN THE NEWS

MS DRUGS DO NOT SLOW DOWN THE DISEASE

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association came out July 18, 2012 saying how disease-modifying drugs (Avonex, Betaseron, Extavia, Rebif) do not slow down the progression of MS. “Treatment with beta interferon was not associated with a delay in progression to disability,” says researcher Helen Tremlett, PhD, of the University of British Columbia. These drugs have supposedly been the game-changers for those with relapsing-remitting MS.

As many as 2.5 million people worldwide and 350,000 people in the U.S. have multiple sclerosis, a progressive disease of the central nervous system that leaves most patients functionally disabled within a decade or two of diagnosis.

The newly published study included 868 patients with relapsing-remitting MS followed for an average of five years during treatment with an interferon beta drug.

These patients were compared to a similar-sized group of untreated patients followed for an average of four years.

March 2012 Newsletter: Are You Getting Enough ZZZs

October 30th, 2012

Time to revisit this topic again because it is so vital to staying in good health. Insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep) is a worldwide problem and is the number one reason why you may not age with quality.

Seven to nine hours of quality sleep is critical to repair your body and mind. Here’s how it is supposed to work:  From 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. your body makes physiological repairs and from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. it makes psychological repairs. During sleep, melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland during sleep. It is a powerful antioxidant, reduces stress, regulates other hormones, protects organs, lowers blood pressure, and maintains the body’s circadian rhythms. The darker your bedroom the more the pineal gland will secrete melatonin. Growth hormone, known as the anti-aging hormone, is secreted by the pituitary gland. The largest surges happen during deep REM sleep. Growth hormone in adults maintains muscle tone, decreases fat, makes sleep more restorative, gives energy and stamina, reduces anxiety, supports the immune system, protects organs, and develops strong bones.

It is normal to have a night or two where your sleep is interrupted. But if this is the case for you on an ongoing basis of weeks, months, and even years, it will greatly weaken your immune system, which can lead to a whole host of symptoms that affect you physically, emotionally, and mentally.

When insomnia becomes a pattern, a vicious cycle can ensue. Your body has a natural circadian rhythm, a 24-hour biological clock, which causes you to have more energy as the sun comes up and causes your body to wind down when it becomes dark. Insomnia over time will disrupt your circadian rhythm; you will  wake up feeling tired and you will feel ramped up or restless at bedtime, making it difficult to fall asleep. To compound this problem, anxiety starts to set in as you start having thoughts of not being able to fall asleep . . . thus more insomnia.

What Causes Insomnia?

  • Caffeine - espresso, coffee, black tea, soda, energy drinks (Red Bull), chocolate, and green tea (if you are very sensitive to caffeine)
  • Stress - continual feelings of being overwhelmed and anxious
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) - waking up in the middle of the night is usually a sign of dysglycemia (imbalance of blood sugar metabolism)
  • Eating late a night - digesting while trying to sleep can keep you awake
  • Sugar and alcohol intake in the evening - not only do sugar and alcohol promote inflammation in the body, they can also disrupt your sleep cycle
  • Medication side effects - many medications can interrupt sleep, particularly decongestants, steroids, and ADD medications
  • Exercising at night - exercise stimulates your brain, heart, and muscles and for some can interfere with falling asleep
  • Electronics before bed - working or playing on computer and laptops close to bed can keep you awake
  • Traveling - particularly for those that fly frequently
  • Sleep apnea - a serious sleep disorder where one’s breathing is interrupted during sleep
  • Shift work - those that work at night vs. during the day
  • Anxiety from the thoughts of not being able to fall asleep

Detriments of Insomnia:

  • fatigue
  • irritability
  • aggressiveness
  • weight gain
  • limp hair
  • wrinkles
  • dehydrated skin
  • weak bones and muscles
  • anxiety
  • diabetes
  • psychosis
  • depression
  • ADD
  • suppression of the immune system

Some Solutions for Quality Sleep:

  • If you are having stubborn insomnia, cut out caffeine altogether because even your morning cup of coffee can be affecting a good night sleep; or at least avoid caffeine after 3 p.m.
  • Be consistent and try to go to bed at, or near, the same time every night; preferably no later than 10 or 11 p.m. to ensure body and mind restoration.
  • To help avoid hypoglycemia, incorporate protein at each meal, snack in between meals, and try not to eat carbohydrates at dinner, only vegetables and protein. Stay off sugars, refined carbohydrates (pasta, bread, crackers, cookies), and alcohol, in general.
  • Avoid sweet desserts and alcohol, especially in the evening.
  • Make sure your bedroom is as dark as possible at bedtime.
  • Do not fall asleep with the television on, especially the news, as this input goes into your subconscious mind and can disrupt sleep.
  • Completely power off or remove electronic devices from your bedroom one hour before sleep. Electromagnetic frequencies from all your electronic gadgets create more inflammation in the body.
  • Try taking an Epsom salt bath one to two hours before going to bed. This can help relax you and your muscles.
  • Steep for 20 minutes a cup of organic chamomile tea and drink one hour before going to bed.
  • Read a book.
  • Deep breathing exercises, breathing in and out slowly from your abdomen.
  • Meditate for five to ten minutes before going to bed.
  • Self hypnosis - breathing and sending relaxation into every part of your body starting with the crown of your head slowly down to the toes of your feet.
  • Visualization exercises that allow you to put away your work or outstanding tasks so you can rest: For example, imagine an empty chest or box at the foot of your bed (or in another room altogether). Give yourself permission to put all your work projects, family stresses, and unfinished business into that box or chest, thereby allowing yourself to only focus on sleep (knowing that you can open up your chest in the morning).

Supplements to Help With Insomnia, if Needed:

(Vitacost.com or Amazon.com will carry many natural sleeping

aids along with those mentioned below)

  • Melatonin - a hormone secreted by the pineal gland that assists with a healthy sleep, restores the circadian rhythm of the body, and helps with jet lag
  • Passionflower - a plant that helps with restlessness and stress
  • Valerian - a plant that contains gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter to produce calming effects
  • L-theanine - an amino acid from green tea that has a calming effect and helps balance GABA in the brain
  • Calms Forte - a mild homeopathic remedy for nervous tension and insomnia
  • 5 HTP - an amino acid that converts to serotonin in the body

ANNOUNCEMENTS & BOOK/FILM RECOMMENDATIONS

BOOK/FILM RECOMMENDATION OF THE MONTH:

February 2012 Newsletter: 80/20 Rule of Moderation

February 2nd, 2012

We all like to indulge in our comfort foods: pizza, coffee, wine, chocolate, french fries, etc. And I would love to tell you that you can have your wine and chocolate every day.  Unfortunately, if you do indulge daily in these kinds of foods, you will not age with quality.  I suggest what I call my 80/20 Rule of Moderation. Keep your diet clean for 80% of the week, and enjoy your comfort food or drink no more than 20% of the week (once or twice a week, or not at all!). For those who are dealing with an autoimmune disease, cancer, or chronic condition, I would say keep your diet as clean as possible because indulging in sugar, for example, even once a week can progress your condition.

Why Do I Need To Tone It Down?

  • Genetically Modified Foods - chemical-laden seeds that disrupt DNA
  • Additives and Preservatives - FDA allows over 2,000 additives/preservatives to be added to our foods
  • Environmental Toxins - we are currently being exposed to high amounts of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, dioxins, heavy metals, petroleum chemicals, etc.
  • Stress - world, financial, and relationship stress are at all time highs

Our bodies are being assaulted from many directions. This compromises our immune systems and overwhelms our hepatic (liver) pathways to remove toxins. So what we could get away with 20 years ago, I feel we can no longer do.

The best place to start moderating and balancing your health is to be conscious of what you eat. Remember that the food companies are in the business of selling food by telling you, the consumers, that their products, e.g. chocolate, wine, and milk, are good for you. Do the research yourself and you will discover differently. One example is chocolate. Yes, there are antioxidants and minerals in raw cacao, which is where we make chocolate from; but that is not what most of us are eating. We are eating a chocolate bar that is also loaded with sugar, milk products, and chemicals that are not good for you and have no business being in your body.

Start this year with smarter choices and more balance. Your body will thank you!

Top Foods/Drinks That Are Most Damaging To The Body:

  • Refined sugars (high fructose corn syrup, white sugar, dextrose, fructose, brown sugar, molasses) are found in candy, ice cream, donuts, fruit juices, snack bars, etc. Sugar creates inflammation in the body and strips it of essential vitamins and minerals needed for optimal functioning. Even unsweetened fruit juices have too much sugar. Consider instead: stevia, chicory root, coconut sugar, and small amounts of birch xylitol (Ultimate Sweetener).
  • Cow’s dairy products (milk, cheeses, ice cream, and, yes, even yogurt!)  Milk is pasteurized, homogenized, and filled with antibiotics and hormones. Pasteurized and homogenized means that milk is heated to high temperatures to kill off bacteria. But this process also changes the mineral structure and makes milk acidic. Acidic foods do not add minerals to the body but actually leach them from the body. Calcium and other minerals come from eating dark leafy green vegetables. What other species drinks milk from another species? None. Switching to Lactaid milk, which removes the lactose (sugar) from milk, doesn’t solve the problem because most people are also allergic to the protein molecule in milk. Consider instead: Unsweetened almond, coconut or hemp milk.
  • Gluten (barley, kamut, oats (unless gluten-free oats), rye, spelt, wheat, white flour) is found in cereals, breads, bagels, pastries, and snack bars. Gluten is a protein that creates inflammation in the body. I call it “goo and glue” in the gut. It strips the villi on the intestinal tract lining allowing antigens and food particles to pass through the intestinal wall and leak into the body.  Consider instead: quinoa, millet, buckwheat, wild rice, brown rice, teff, and amaranth.
  • Alcohol - a neurotoxin. Yes, wine has resveratrol in it, but you can get the benefits of that by taking a supplement or eating grapes–not drinking it in a base of chemicals that negatively impact liver and brain function.
  • Trans fats (partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated oils) - are found in processed foods such as pizza, chips, breads, pastries, donuts, and french fries. Trans fats are vegetable oils heated to high temperatures for the sole purpose of increasing the shelf life of a food product. These denatured oils clog arteries, increases bad cholesterol, and contribute to heart disease and diabetes.
  • Artificial sweeteners, caffeine, MSG -  many processed foods and drinks contain chemicals and stimulants. They have a direct impact on brain function and energy. High energy drinks such as Red Bull, Rockstar, Cocaine Energy drink, are loaded with sugar and caffeine, which over excite the brain. Caffeine, in particular, is acidic, an irritant to the central nervous system, and disrupts the endocrine system.

HEALTHY DIET:

  • Vegetables - ideally, 60% of your diet should be vegetables. Organic, fresh vegetables are high in minerals, vitamins, and phytonutrients. The most beneficial are dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, broccoli, arugula, watercress, etc.
  • Beans/Legumes - are high in fiber, minerals, and protein.  Soak overnight before cooking whenever possible to minimize gas and allow for shorter cooking times which will preserve nutritional value.
  • Animal Proteins - fish (not farmed), antibiotic-, hormone-free eggs, chicken, turkey, and small amounts of grass-fed red meat.  Amino acids are building blocks of protein needed by every cell in the body.
  • Nuts & Seeds - raw nuts/seeds are high in minerals, trace minerals, and supply good fats to the brain, heart, and skin.
  • Fruits - organic fruits are nature’s best sweet snack. Limit to one to two pieces a day. Stay away from unsweetened/sweetened fruit juices and dried fruits because of their high sugar content.
  • Oils - olive, grapeseed, hemp, flaxseed, and coconut oil are good choices to have in your kitchen. Make sure to check if and at what temperatures these oils can be heated (e.g., hemp seed oil cannot be heated and olive oil should be used at low temperatures).

January 2012 Newsletter: Autoimmune Bootcamp

February 2nd, 2012

I hope you had a wonderful, joyful holiday season.

This year, my New Year’s resolution is to share the work I do with as many people as possible—to continue to educate people and help them get and stay well.

What’s your New Year’s resolution?

I imagine that for many of you, one of your major resolutions is to continue on your healing path and to achieve even greater health than you had in 2011.

I think that’s an amazing goal! And I’m going to continue to do my best to help you make it a reality.

To that end, I’m proud to be able to begin the year by offering you the Autoimmune Warrior Bootcamp
http://www.theselfhealingcoach.com/op/awbootcamp
7-week webinar series.

I launched this series in October of last year as a live weekly class with blogger and health coach Karen Gordon.

It was even more popular than we expected and extremely well-received, and I’m thrilled that I can now make it available to
all of you who weren’t able to be a part of the live class.

What I really love about this program and what I believe makes it so valuable is this:

Before we created the Autoimmune Warrior Bootcamp, the only way to get personal access to what I have learned in my 14 years of practice was by booking a session with me.

But, despite the fact that I do my absolute best to convey as much value to you as possible in our sessions, time is limited, and I can only book so many sessions per day.

But now, you can get direct access to the information it took me 14 years to learn on how to beat autoimmune disease, whenever and wherever you want, carefully and thoughtfully distilled for you to learn and apply easily and simply, on demand.

When you purchase the Autoimmune Bootcamp, you’ll receive exactly what the live class received, but you’ll have the benefit of access to the entire 14-hour program INSTANTLY so you can work through the weeks at whatever pace makes sense for you. You’ll also get instant access to the transcripts of the classes and the printable versions of each webinar, so you can take notes as you go.

The Bootcamp is intended to arm you with the information, inspiration, and practical advice and tools you need to get going on my recovery plan to beat autoimmune diease. I have helped thousands of people heal and I hope very much to add you to that list this year.

March 2011 Newsletter: Children’s Health

March 15th, 2011

I recently watched a Dr. Oz show about vaccinations and their possible link to autism. The show was heated and it made me reflect on what parents need to know to keep their child healthy. ADD, autism, autoimmune diseases, obesity, diabetes, eczema, earaches, hypoglycemia, digestive issues, asthma…the numbers continually rise among children, and particularly in the US. Why? Because children, not just adults, are polluted from a poor diet, infections (candida/yeast, parasites, viruses), vaccinations, stress, and environmental toxins. Science has shown that today the umbilical cord of a newborn already contains 200 chemicals. This means the genes that each generation is passing down are weaker as a result of adults being more toxic and inflamed than ever before.

The starting point begins with nutrition. Nutrition is the key to turn around a health condition that already exists, or to prevent one from occurring. Take one look at the lunches served in schools and you will find virtually nothing healthy on the tray. Instead there are piles of processed and denatured food containing trans fats, gluten, high fructose corn syrup, and preservatives. Parents are frustrated as to why their child is having difficulties at school and why their grades are poor. How can you expect a child to sit still, focus, and produce positive results when trash is going into their system. They can’t!

TOP FOODS TO ELIMINATE FROM YOUR CHILD’S DIET:

  • Cow’s dairy products (milk, cheeses, ice cream, and yes even yogurt) - milk is pasteurized, homogenized, and filled with antibiotics and hormones. Milk that has been pasteurized and homogenized means that it is heated to high temperatures to kill off bacteria. Conditions linked to drinking and eating dairy products:
ADD, autism, eczema, allergies, asthma, constipation/diarrhea, earaches, sinus problems, and joint pain.
  • Gluten (barley, kamut, oats (unless Bob’s Red Mill’s Gluten-free oats), rye, spelt, wheat, white flour) is found in cereals, breads, bagels, pastries, and snack bars. Gluten is a protein that creates inflammation in the body. I call it “goo and glue” in the gut. It strips the villi on the intestinal tract lining allowing antigens and food particles to pass through the intestinal wall and leak into the body.
Conditions linked to eating gluten grains:
ADD, autism, allergies, anxiety/depression, eczema, autoimmune diseases, candida, gastrointestinal issues, and Celiac disease.
  • Refined sugars (high fructose corn syrup, white sugar, dextrose) - are found in candy, ice cream, donuts, fruit juices, snack bars, etc. Sugar creates inflammation in the body and strips it of essential vitamins and minerals needed for optimal functioning. Even unsweetened fruit juices have too much sugar.
Conditions linked to eating refined sugar:
ADD, autism, hyperactivity, gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, hypoglycemia, eczema, anxiety, and autoimmune diseases.
  • Trans fats (partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated oils) - are found in processed foods such as pizza, chips, breads, pastries, donuts, and french fries. Trans fats are vegetable oils heated to high temperatures used only to preserve the shelf life of a food product. These denatured oils clog arteries, increases bad cholesterol, and contributes to heart disease and diabetes.
Conditions linked to eating trans fats:
Diabetes (1 out of 3 children in the US), obesity, high cholesterol, heart conditions, eczema, neurological disorders.
  • Miscellaneous (artificial sweeteners, caffeine, MSG, preservatives) - Chemicals are found in all processed foods. They have a direct impact on brain function and energy. High energy drinks such as Red Bull, Rockstar, Cocaine Energy drink, are loaded with sugar, caffeine, and preservatives which over excite the brain.
Conditions linked to caffeine, artificial sweeteners, perservatives:
Epilepsy, allergies, headaches, pms, neurological disorders, autism, ADD, and anxiety/depression.

So now you’re thinking what am I going to feed my child? Food that is not processed. Yes, it is tough to control what your child eats. Yes, they will kick and scream and refuse to eat what you serve them. Do the best you can and start off with eliminating one food group at a time. Shop for healthier items from health food stores, amazon.com, and vitacost.com that have no trans fats, less sugar, better sweeteners, etc. You will notice swift changes in your child’s behavior and health by lessening the load of toxicity in the body.

Making and packing your child’s lunch is the best solution. The USDA will not fund schools if they don’t reach a certain number of calories per day per lunch. The only way that can happen is that the school must serve unhealthy meals. Try to keep your child’s total grams of sugar per day under 10 grams. One 8 oz. soda has 28 grams of sugar.

HEALTHY DIET & FOOD ALTERNATIVES:

A health diet for you child would consist of:

  • Vegetables - organic fresh vegetables are high in minerals, vitamins, and phytonutrients. The most important are dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, broccoli, arugula, etc.
  • Beans/Legumes - are high in fiber, minerals, and protein.  Soak overnight before cooking whenever possible to minimize gas and allow for shorter cooking times to preserve nutritional value.
  • Animal Proteins - fish (not farmed), antibiotic-, hormone-free eggs, chicken, turkey, lamb, and small amounts of red meat.  Amino acids are building blocks of protein needed by every cell in the body.
  • Nuts & Seeds - raw and small amounts of dry roasted. Nuts/seeds are high in minerals, trace minerals, and supply good fats to the brain, heart, and skin.
  • Fruits - organic fruits are nature’s best sweet snack. Limit to one to two pieces a day. Allow only small amounts of unsweetened fruit juices and dried fruits as they are high in sugar.
  • Oils - olive oil (low heat), grapseed, and coconut oil are good choices that can withstand heat. Flaxseed is another good oil but must not be heated or it will turn rancid so use with salad dressings, condiments, etc.
  • Dairy alternatives - unsweetened almond, hemp, or coconut milk. If you must get a sweetened one, find one with the lowest grams of sugar on the label. Raw goat milk and raw goat/sheep cheese are better substitutes if dairy is a must. Limit or avoid soy and rice milk. Soy is a high allergen and rice milk is high in carbohydrates if more than 4 oz is used at one time.
  • Gluten free grains - quinoa, gluten-free oatmeal, brown rice, buckwheat, wild rice, millet, teff, amaranth. Always try to use whole gluten free grains, not those stripped of minerals/vitamins such as white rice or instant oatmeal. Make hot cereals and add stevia, fresh fruit, almond milk, and cinnamon to sweeten. If you must use a tastier sweetener then use small amounts of organic raw honey.  Brands that make gluten free items: Namaste foods, Sami’s Bakery (millet/flax products), French Meadows, Edward & Sons, Go Raw Crackers, Food For Life, Authentic Foods.
  • Sugar substitutes - stevia, Just Like Sugar, xylitol (Ultimate Life, Ultimate Sweetener), and small amount of raw honey. Read the nutritional facts label on any sweet dessert or food item and make sure the sugars are lower than 5 grams whenever possible.

  • Snack foods - you can’t expect your child to never indulge in snack items. Buy trans fat free chips, gluten free crackers, naturally sweetened cereals (honey). Read ingredients and if there are more than 5 to 8 ingredients and you can’t recognize or pronounce put it back…too many sugars, and chemicals/preservatives.

Diet alone is not enough to keep your child healthy. Soils are no longer rich in minerals and therefore produce nutrient deficient foods. Processed foods strip the  body of its vitamin and minerals. To make up for the deficiencies baseline supplementation should be considered. These brands listed below can be found on vitacost.com, iherb.com, or amazon.com to save you money.

DAILY SUPPLEMENTATION:

  • Multivitamin & Mineral - Childlife, Nature’s Plus Animal Parade, Rainbow Light, or Greens Today Childrens Formula. Multivitamins and minerals provide the basics for the body to stay healthy.
  • DHA for kids - Nordic Naturals, Childlife, or Carlson. Omega 3 fish oil is critical for brain, heart, and hormone function.

  • Vitamin C - Nature’s Plus Animal Parade, Childlife, or Carlson. A beneficial antioxidant and immune booster.
  • Greens - Natures Plus Animal Parade Kidgreenz, or Greens Today Children’s Formula (all in one multivitamin/mineral and greens). To keep the body alkaline vs. acidic from poor diet and stress. Also supply the body with minerals and fill in the gaps when children refuse to eat vegetables/fruits.
  • Probiotics - Childlife, Jarrow, Garden of Life, NSI, or Udo’s Choice. Probiotics supply good bacteria to the gastrointestinal tract and keep infections (candida, bacteria, viral, parasitical) away.

EXERCISE:

Children need exercise and movement to stay healthy and relieve stress. Make it a point to reduce the time your child plays video games or watches television. Replace that time with sports, dance classes, playing games outside with friends. I remember being a young child during the summer and playing outside all day and going to bed exhausted and how good that felt. Our bodies need to move and breath deeply. Instead children are bombarded with electromagnetic frequencies from cell phones, computer screens, video games, and television.

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICITY:

The environment has more toxins now than ever before from pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, petrochemicals, electromagnetic frequencies. Be mindful of having non toxic house cleaning products in the house. Buying chemical free body care products and toothpastes (fluoride free). Investing in water and air filtration systems for cleaner water and better indoor air quality.

VACCINATIONS:

Vaccine therapy is one of the most pressing issues to become educated on. Just last month a U.S. Supreme Court ruling makes it more difficult for  pharmaceutical companies to be sued and found liable for injury or death to your child from a vaccine. Also laws are changing to make vaccinations mandatory in each state. This is an infringement on our right to choose. There are some great resources to get you educated and I suggest you do so. This is a choice only educated parents can make.

Vaccines have live and dead strains of viruses, bacteria, mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum, and other substances that can injure your child now and later bring about retroviruses.  When I was born I had about 17 vaccinations. Today a child will have over 32 vaccinations. Hepatitis B vaccine is now given to your infant before she or he leaves the hospital–before a child has a fully developed brain barrier formed. You need to know the law, and your options, including your option to sign a document refusing that your child get this vaccine at birth.

February 2011 Newsletter: Who is Your Best Health Care Provider?

February 1st, 2011
I was coming back from a short road trip last week and was struck and saddened by five billboard signs encouraging lap band surgery or gastric by-pass surgery. One sign read, “Diets fail, lap bands work.” In what other country in the world would you see this billboard?Unfortunately, we have become desperate and lazy about taking care of our health. We want magic-bullet fixes, surgery, or pharmaceutical medications, which come with high price tags and sides effects.

Remember our bodies are not deficient in Prozac, Crestor, or Prilosec. We are indeed deficient in vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Over time, these deficiencies create the unhealthy conditions we are experiencing.

Health is a choice and we all have this amazing capacity to make better choices. The time is NOW to wake up and take action with your health. Millions of people are without health insurance. The conditions which I am used to seeing in a 60 or 70 year old are now appearing in people much younger.

Yes, taking action means moving out of your comfort zone. Yes, it means cooking more, spending more money on organic, antibiotic and hormone-free animal proteins, and eliminating the daily junk food. And yes, it means making time to exercise for at least 30 minutes, four times per week.

As a nation, we are failing to educate ourselves on how to stay healthy. Food manufactures are filling your grocery aisles with processed foods; fast food restaurants are selling “food” for under a $1.00 (what do you think you are really eating?); beauty care manufacturers are selling skin and hair products filled with chemicals that are absorbed through your skin and go directly into your bloodstream; insurance companies are keeping your doctor visits to  15 minutes; prescription medication is overused and misused; chemical companies are controlling the food supply with genetically modified seeds and foods; excessive vaccinations are mandated (a child now receives 32 vaccinations compared to my 17 when I was a child); and our water supplies are contaminated.

There are times when medications are necessary. Similarly, there are times to let yourself enjoy your favorite treat or drink. But we’ve lost the sense of moderation and balance in our lives.

There are many things out of our control, yet YOU can control what goes into and onto your body. It is time that you start making choices that prevent disease and help you age with quality.

10 Action Steps to Integrate
Towards Making You Healthier:

  • Stop eating at fast food restaurants. Reduce or omit the intake of white flour, refined sugars, dairy products, trans fats, soda, and alcohol.
  • Drink 8 glasses of purified water daily. Any herbal or green teas count as a credit towards your 8 glasses.
  • Buy organic vegetables and fruits, antibiotic and hormone-free eggs, dairy products, chicken, turkey, and red meat.
  • Cook at least three healthy meals a week. Incorporate dark leafy greens daily (kale, spinach, arugula, broccoli, baby greens, etc.)
  • Start a basic supplement regime to replace what your body is missing and to neutralize environmental toxicity:1. Multi vitamin/mineral without iron
    2. Extra vitamin C
    3. Extra vitamin E
    4. Omega 3 fish oil
    5. Evening primrose oil for women
    6. Probiotics
    7. Free form amino acid blend
    8. Green powder for alkalizing the body, such as Nanogreens or Macrogreens
  • Exercise at least four times a week: walking briskly, yoga, swimming, or your favorite sport.
  • Buy only personal health care products that use non toxic chemicals. Brands such as Alba, Aubrey, Weleda (toothpaste and deodorant) on vitacost.com, iherb.com, or amazon.com
  • Relieve stress by either meditating for 5-10 minutes before you spring out of bed, yoga twice a week, journal each morning or night, breath deeply throughout the day, smile and laugh several times a day, hug a tree for 1 minute
  • Stay informed and educate your family, friends, and neighbors with free daily health oriented web newsletters: www.mercola.com and www.naturalnews.com
  • Love and respect your body. Yes, you are more than just a body, but if don’t protect, nourish, and honor your “house,” it will crumble

January 2011 Newsletter Top 5 Teas to Keep You Healthy

January 1st, 2011

Not a great water drinker? Then think about adding powerful teas into the mix of your daily fluid intake. The average person needs half their body weight in ounces of water (e.g.,150 lbs = 75 oz or 9 glasses of water). The good news is that tea counts as water and you can subtract the cups of tea from the total amount of water you need to drink. But note that all teas are diuretics so make sure to drink purified water as well.

Green Tea

Green tea originates from China. Green tea is well-established as a potent source of healing antioxidants called polyphenols–the same beneficial compounds found in fruits and vegetables and even in red wine. It is very high in antioxidants, which prevent inflammatory responses in the body. Green tea is also good for helping with blood sugar and insulin levels, blood pressure, headaches, lowering cholesterol, immune system, raising metabolism for weight loss, and preventing and fighting cancer. 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the afternoon would be ideal times to drink green tea since it contains caffeine. Drink organic green teas. There are many good organic sources you can find in your local health food stores and on the internet. This is a tea that you can drink daily.

Chamomile Tea
Chamomile is found all over the world. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-allergenic, and sedative properties. The key with using chamomile as a sleeping aid is to steep the tea for 20 minutes and drink 1 hour before going to bed. Chamomile is also good as a digestive aid. Organic chamomile tea is a great way to end the day to relax your mind and body.

This is a tea that you can drink daily.

Note: Do not drink Chamomile tea if you have ragweed allergies.

Red Clover Tea
Red clover is a species of clover, native to Europe, Western Asia, and northwest Africia, but is grown all over. Red clover is a rich source of
isoflavones (water-soluble chemicals that act like estrogens and are found in many plants).

Red clover is a foundational step to cleansing the blood and lymphatic system. It is also beneficial in removing stress hormones from the body. There is some controversy about using red clover in connection to breast health. I have found it to be beneficial in preventing common female disorders that pertain to the breast, ovaries, and uterus. Make sure your source is organic and bulk loose leaf (www.pacificbotanicals.com). Do not buy tea bags brands–they are typically not good quality and tend to have mold because they sit on the shelves of stores too long.

Work up slowly (increase by 1 cup every three to five days) if you decide to drink more than 1 cup per day as it is initially detoxifying and common to experience die-off symptoms the first few days, such as a headache, fatigue, and brain fog. Make sure you have daily bowel movements (everyone needs to eliminate once per day–two to three time per day is ideal. If constipated, add in more fiber, such as FiberSmart by Renew Life) before drinking this tea. Therapeutic levels of red clover are 3 to 4 cups per day and you can drink three months at a time. Maintenance would be 1 to 2 cups three to four times per week.

How to make: 1 tsp of herb to 8 oz of boiled water makes 1 cup of tea. Steep 15 minutes. For the first couple of weeks finish your tea before 6 p.m. - there is no caffeine but because red clover cleans the bloodstream and it can keep you up at night until your body gets used to it.

Note: Do not drink this tea if you are on blood thinning medication, pregnant/breast feeding, or have grass allergies
.

Pau D’arco Tea
Pau d’arco is native to South America and has antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparastical properties. It is very effective against candida overgrowth, herpes, cancer, and any other microbial infection.
Work up slowly
(increase by 1 cup every three to five days) if you decide to drink more than 1 cup a day as it is detoxifying and common to experience die-off symptoms the first few days, such as a headache, fatigue, and brain fog. Make sure your bowel elimination is daily before drinking this tea.

Traditional Medicinals or www.pacificbotanicals.com are good sources for this tea. It is bitter tasting so you might want to add stevia. Pau ‘Darco is good to mix with red clover for the most therapeutic value. Therapeutic levels of pau d’arco are 3 to 4 cups a day and you can drink this tea three months at a time. Ideal to drink after vacations, holiday binging, after weekends of indulging on alcohol/unhealthy foods, or if you have a health condition. Maintenance would be 1 to 2 cups three to four times per week.

How to make: 1 tsp of herb to 8 oz of boiled water makes 1 cup of tea. Steep 15 minutes.

Note: Do not drink this tea if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

Rainforest Treasure Tea

Rainforest Treasure Tea is from Amazon Herb Company. This blend of amazon herbs has many beneficial properties. For example, Una de Gato, is a powerful anti-inflammatory good for arthritis and inflammatory conditions. This tea also cleans the blood and is a broad spectrum infection fighter. Jatoba is an herb that helps with bladder and prostate infections, and is also an energizer, fortifier, and decongestant used for respiratory problems. Tahari is an herb that strengthens the immune system. Chuchuhuasi is an herb that helps relieve arthritis, rheumatism, and back pain. Chanca piedra (stone crusher) removes mucous and stones from kidneys and urinary tract as well as from the liver and gall bladder. And Stevia is an herb to help with pancreatic function.

How to make: One tea bag (makes 2-3 cups) daily, steeped for 10 minutes. You can drink this tea daily.

Note: Do not drink this tea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

October 2010 Newsletter Super Foods

Pomegranate, Acai, Noni, Blueberry
Yes…No…Which One?

Today the market is flooded with antioxidant powders and juices from pomegranate, acai, black cherry, gogi berries, noni, blueberries, cranberry, etc…each one being touted as the best antioxidant ever to reverse and prevent disease. Do I need to be taking one of these? And which one is the best?

The simple answer is yes. With bodies being containers of toxins from poor diet, the environment, and stress, the demand is greater to keep you in balance. Our food supply is denatured, depleted, and even harmful in many cases from the use of pesticides, herbicides, being genetically modified, and loaded with additives and sugars. Therefore, we need extra antioxidant protection to eliminate free radical damage that is aging us more quickly and bringing about conditions/diseases at alarming rates.

What Are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products) which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as “free radical scavengers” and hence prevent and repair damage. Phytochemicals are chemical compounds that naturally occur in plants and contain antioxidant protection. Carotenoids, flavonoids, isoflavones, phytosterols, are just some of the names of phytochemicals that help us stay balanced.

Phytochemicals In Fruits:

  • Blueberries are a rich source of phytochemicals such as anthocyanidins, flavonoids, resveratrol, anthocyanins, and ellagic acid.
  • Acai fruits are very rich in vitamins but also contain high levels of antioxidant phytochemicals such as cyanidin.
  • Noni is rich in octoanoic acid, scopoletin, damnacanthal, terpenoids, anthraquinones, caproic acid, ursolic acid, and rutin.
  • Cranberry contains catechins, triterpenoids, quinic acid, hippuric acid, and anthocyanin.
  • Pomegrante juice contains ellagitannins, pelargonidin, punicalin, punicalagin, anthocyanins, cyanidin, and ellagic acid.

What Is The Best Way To Add In Antioxidants?
Eating food is still the number one choice in how to fuel and regenerate the body…the key is buying organic fruits and vegetables. But fruit juices such as pomegranate, blueberry, and black cherry juice, etc are high in sugar. I prefer using powder blends that do not contain a high sugar content and contain a variety fruits to obtain optimal antioxidant protection.

Products With Antioxidant Protection:
Fruits of the Earth - HealthForce Nutritionals
NanoReds - BioPharma Scientific
Nanogreens - BioPharma Scientific - providing both alkalizing greens, fruits, and other vitamins and antioxidants.
Miracle Reds - MacroLife Naturals

August 2010 Newsletter - Gluten Know Your Facts

August 1st, 2010
Gluten-free food products are taking up an entire aisle in your health-food stores. Why is that and why is gluten bad for you?

What Is Gluten?
Gluten consists of two proteins, gliadin and glutenin, found in all grains but with highest concentrations in wheat, wheat derivatives (such as kamut and spelt), barley, oats, and rye. Oats are included in this list not because they are naturally high in gluten but because of cross-contamination in milling plants that also process wheat.

The typical American diet consists mainly of white flour and wheat products.
The large quantities of white flour and wheat products consumed, in combination with the fact that 90% of wheat is genetically modified (which means more chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides), has made us gluten-sensitive.

Gluten sensitivity and Celiac disease is becoming more prevalent each year. Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disorder of the small intestinal lining, whereby gluten destroys the villi, tiny hair-like projections along the intestinal walls that absorb nutrients.

Gluten Sensitivity/Allergy Can Result In:

  • Allergies
  • Anemia
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Back pain
  • Bloating/gas/cramps
  • Celiac disease
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Eczema
  • Edema
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Joint Pain
  • Malabsorption
  • Mouth Sores/Cracks
  • Sinusitis
  • Skin Rashes
  • Weight Loss

“Gluten-Free” Doesn’t Always Mean It Is Good For You
Most gluten-free items just remove the gluten grain but still have all the unhealthy items that most processed food products have such as refined starches (potato, white rice), yeast, sugars, and trans-fats. Make sure to read ingredients on everything you purchase and try to get quality ingredients with whole grains (quinoa, millet, brown rice, wild rice, amaranth, teff), and limited or no added sugars or fillers.

Clue: If a food item has more than 5-7 ingredients listed (and you can’t pronounce the words) then put it down…that is not food!

Example: Gluten-Free Muffin Mix
(17 grams of sugar and refined flours that spike sugar levels)

  • Sugar, rice flour, modified potato starch, inulin, modified tapioca starch, rice flour, emulsifier, rice starch, ployglycerols esters of fatty acids, mono and diglycerides of fatty acids, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bicarbonate, cornstarch, monocalcium phosphate, natural vanilla flavor, salt, guar gum, xanthan gum, nutmeg

  • Beer
  • Bologna
  • Bouillon
  • Brewer’s yeast
  • Canned bakes beans
  • Chutneys
  • Gravy/sauces
  • Gum
  • Hydrolyzed vegetable protein
  • Imitation crab meat
  • Malt vinegar
