March Newsletter 2010 Organic and Genetically Modified Foods

March 25th, 2010
We hear the words organic and genetically modified foods. What do these terms mean and why is it important to know the facts?

Organically farmed animals are those raised without the use of antibiotics, artificial hormones, steroids, or other drugs and chemicals. They are raised on open farmland and allowed to graze and roam freely, getting their dose of fresh air and sunshine. They are also fed clean and healthy organic foods. Organic meat must also not be irradiated or processed with harmful chemicals. Organically farmed animals must not be the offspring of cloned or otherwise genetically modified animals.

By contrast, commercially farmed animals are usually raised in filthy and cramped conditions, where they are hemmed in and locked up, resulting in total lack of movement. They are  often fed unclean foods which includes, among other things, the sometimes diseased innards of other animals.

Organic produce are grown using organic farming methods, without the use of chemical or synthetic pesticides, such as fungicides, herbicides and insecticides, fertilizers, or other harmful chemicals.
No chemicals are used to make the fruits and vegetables grow faster, or ripen faster, or grow bigger, or alter their taste and appearance, etc.

Organic food products must not have artificial or chemical flavorings, colors or additives added. Organic food must neither have been irradiated, nor be biologically or genetically modified, nor have genetically modified organisms (GMO).

A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. We are making super foods that stray from nature’s creation, which also consist of using more pesticides and herbicides. Genetically modified foods are purportedly used to increase crop yields, reduce costs for farmers, and to use less herbicides. Far from the truth. The traits of GM crops can get passed on to other non-GM crops. This means that a crop engineered to contain a vaccine, or to be sterile, could easily taint an entire region, and eventually the entire world. The majority of corn, soy, and wheat in this country is genetically modified.

GM Foods Can Be Or Cause:

  • Toxic
  • Less nutritious
  • Carcinogenic
  • Infertility
  • Infant mortality
  • Food allergies
  • Immune dysfunction
  • Stunted growth
  • Accelerate aging
  • Super-viruses
  • Outbreaks of Morgellons Disease. (Morgellons Disease, has been cropping up worldwide, is described as a sensation of bugs moving around beneath their skin. This unsettling sensation is accompanied by open lesions that ooze blue, black or white fibers that can be several millimeters long. These fibers are strong enough to distend the skin when pulled and are painful to remove).

How To Recognize GM Foods:

  • Examine produce stickers on the fruits and vegetables you buy. The PLU code for conventionally grown fruit consists of four numbers; organically grown fruit has five numbers prefaced by the number nine; and GM fruit has five numbers prefaced by the number eight.

Examples Of PLU Stickers On Produce:
    #94017 organic
    #4017 conventional
    #83058 genetically modified

What Can You Do?
  • Buy organic foods. The only foods that you can be sure are not GM foods are labeled “Certified Organic“. Bottom line - organic foods are more expensive and you are worth it. As the demand increases prices will come down.
  • Shop and support local farmers markets.
  • Make more meals at home using organic foods.
  • As a consumer you have power. Large portions of Europe have already succeeded in kicking GMOs out of their food supply, forcing food manufacturers to use real ingredients in their European product lines.
  • Let your elected official know how you feel about GM foods.
  • Sites to help you become educated and more vocal:
  • Stay away from processed foods. Most of these contain corn, wheat, and soy products.
  • Ask your local supermarket to stock the shelves with more natural organic foods.
  • Watch the movie “Food Inc.”
  • The True Food Shopping Guide is also great tool to help you determine which brands and products contain GMO ingredients. Print it out and take it with you every time you go to the grocery store. Avoid all processed food products and buy only fresh, locally grown, organic foods.

February Newsletter 2010 - Hypoglycemia

March 25th, 2010
Hypoglycemia

A Condition to Take Seriously

Hypoglycemia is a condition that occurs when your blood sugar (glucose) is too low. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) usually occurs while fasting or in between meals. Reactive hypoglycemia is low blood sugar that occurs after a meal - usually one to three hours after eating.

Hypoglycemia occurs when:

  • Your body’s sugar (glucose) is used up too quickly
  • Glucose is released into the bloodstream too slowly
  • Too much insulin is released into the bloodstream

Glucose, an important source of energy for the body, comes from food. Carbohydrates are the main dietary source of glucose. After a meal, glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream and carried to the body’s cells. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas in response to increased glucose levels in the blood and reduces blood sugar. If a person takes in more glucose than the body needs at a certain time, the body stores the extra glucose in the liver and muscles as glycogen, which the body can then use for energy between meals. Extra glucose can also be changed to fat, which is stored in fat cells, and which the body may also use for energy.

When blood glucose begins to fall, glucagon (another hormone made by the pancreas) signals the liver to break down glycogen and release glucose into the bloodstream. Blood glucose will then rise toward a normal level. Normal blood sugar levels range between 83-75 mg/dL.

  • Alcohol
  • Coffee
  • Fruit Juices
  • Soft drinks
  • Refined sugar (ice cream, chocolate, candy)
  • Stress
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • White flour (bread, pastry, donuts, pasta)

Symptoms of mild hypoglycemia

Symptoms of mild low blood sugar occur when blood sugar falls below 70 mg/dL:

  • Nausea
  • Extreme hunger
  • Feeling nervous or jittery
  • Cold, clammy, wet skin and/or excessive sweating not caused by exercise
  • A rapid heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • Numbness or tingling of the fingertips or lips
  • Trembling
  • Decreased alertness
  • Craving sweets
  • Different size pupils
  • Muscle pain

Moderate hypoglycemia

If blood sugar continues to fall, the nervous system will be affected. Symptoms that occur when the blood sugar falls below 55 mg/dL:

  • Mood changes, such as irritability, restlessness, or anger
  • Confusion, difficulty in thinking, or inability to concentrate
  • Blurred vision, anxiety, dizziness, lightheadedness or headache
  • Weakness, lack of energy
  • Poor coordination
  • Difficulty walking or talking, such as staggering or slurred speech
  • Fatigue, lethargy, or drowsiness
  • Memory loss
  • Hallucinations
  • Fainting
  • Paleness
  • Sleep difficulty
  • Vomiting
  • Panic attacks

Severe hypoglycemia

The symptoms of severe low blood sugar develop when blood sugar falls below 35 mg/dL to 40 mg/dL:

  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Loss of consciousness, coma
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)

Suggestions to Stabilize and Balance Blood Sugar:
  • Eat small meals and snacks every 2-3 hours
  • Limit total carbohydrate intake to 25-50 grams/day and eat only whole grains
  • Include protein with every meal
  • Exercise regularly
  • Take a supplement to help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce carbohydrate/sugar cravings. I suggest Gluco abx by Apex Energetics, which should be taken 1-2 capsules 3x/day with meals. To order, call 1-800-736-4381 or 949-251-0152 (international orders) and set up an account using P2017.
  • Avoid alcohol, refined carbohydrates (pasta, white rice, breads, and white flour products), potatoes, corn, caffeine, refined sugars and natural sweeteners such as honey and agave nectar
  • Avoid sugary foods on an empty stomach

January Newsletter 2010 Calcum/Osteoporosis

March 25th, 2010
Calcium & Osteoporosis

“Milk Does Not Do A Body Good”

Osteoporosis is a disease of bone that leads to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone microarchitecture is disrupted, and the amount and variety of proteins in bone is altered.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body but why are we lacking in it? The cause of calcium deficiencies is excessive consumption of high-acid foods, such as animal meats, caffeine, refined carbohydrates, refined sugars, and pasteurized milk and dairy products. Pasteurization and homogenization of cow’s milk alter its mineral composition, making it acidic to the body. Eating these acid-forming foods forces the body to leach calcium and other minerals from the rest of the body to buffer the acidity in the bloodstream and maintain an alkaline condition of pH 7.35. Without this protective mechanism, death would result. To maintain that pH balance, the blood robs minerals, which are alkaline, from the body’s biggest storehouse of minerals - the musculoskeletal system.

In short, consuming dairy products creates exactly the opposite effect that you may be trying to achieve. Unfortunately this buffer system causes unknown strain and can go unnoticed for years. Osteoporosis is a prime example of this.

When it comes to supplementation you need more than calcium to support bone growth. Co-factors such as vitamin D3, magnesium, strontium, boron, and silica are also needed. I have listed a supplement from Garden of Life below that comes from whole plant sources to help you obtain maximum absorption.

Substitute

cow’s milk with unsweetened almond milk or raw goat milk. Eat small amounts of raw goat and sheep cheese. Eating raw goat products gives you the  enzymes needed to digest and absorb the minerals properly.

Worst Offenders That Leach Calcium And Other Minerals:

  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes
  • Coffee
  • Soft drinks
  • Pasteurized dairy products (milk, cheese)
  • Refined sugar (ice cream, chocolate, candy)
  • Stress
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • White flour (bread, pastry, donuts, pasta)

Suggestions To Reverse Osteoporosis:

  • 60% of your daily diet to consist of organic vegetables, especially dark leafy greens
  • Green powder - NanoGreens (BioPharma Scientific), Vitamineral Green (Healthforce Nutritionals), or Miracle Greens (Macro Greens)

  • Garden of Life - Vitamin Code Bone Growth Kit
  • Chondroitin/glucosamine/msm supplement (do not take if you are allergic to shellfish)
  • Vitamin D3 supplement (5,000 iu daily)
  • Maca root - vitamyr.com - 2 tsp per day when arising to maintain hormonal balance as low estrogen levels can slow bone growth

Levaquin (Antibiotic) - Beware

Levaquin is in a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones (flor-o-KWIN-o-lones). It fights bacteria in the body.

Levaquin is used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder, or prostate. It is also used to treat bacterial infections that cause bronchitis or pneumonia, and to treat people who have been exposed to anthrax.

Levaquin may cause swelling or tearing of a tendon (the fiber that connects bones to muscles in the body), especially in the Achilles’ tendon of the heel.

Everyone I have talked to that has taken Levaquin is suffering from swelling, numbness, pain, or tearing of tendons. I strongly encourage you to reconsider taking this drug if it is prescribed.

Sweeteners

Sweeteners to use on a candida diet or for those that want to keep sugars to a minimum.
  • Sweet Leaf - liquids - comes in different flavors and is the most tasty - usually found in the supplement section of your health food store or vitacost.com
  • Just Like Sugar - chicory root dietary fiber, calcium, vitamin C, natural flavors from the peel of the orange.
  • Sweet Fiber - inulin, an all-natural vegetable fiber.

December Newsletter 2009 Acid Alkaline Balance

March 25th, 2010
Acid/Alkaline Balance

What Does This Mean And Why Is It Important?

The body has a natural acid/alkaline balance and different parts of the body have different pH values. pH (potential of hydrogen) is the measure of acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The pH scale goes from 0-14. A pH of 7 is neutral and any value below is acidic, and any value above is alkaline. Your blood must stay at 7.35 (alkaline) otherwise if it varies slightly you cannot survive. The stomach has a normal pH of 1.5 to 3.5 making it very acidic to help you breakdown food.

When you hear the term you are too acidic understand that this refers to the pH of the body’s fluids and tissues (more the entirety of the body), which is different than talking about stomach pH. The cause of disease is infection and inflammation. Being too acidic is one of the greatest factors to create inflammation in the body.

Worst Acidic Offenders:

  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes
  • Coffee
  • Soft drinks
  • Refined sugar (ice cream, chocolate, candy)
  • Stress
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • White flour (bread, pastry, donuts, pasta)

Your body’s innate intelligence is to keep homeostasis or equilibrium. When you are acidic the body will steal minerals from organs and tissues to keep the blood alkaline and maintain homeostasis. Unfortunately this buffer system causes unknown strain and can go unnoticed for years. Osteoporosis is a prime example of this. Eating chocolate and drinking coffee and sodas makes you acidic, which causes minerals, that are alkaline, to be leached the from the bones in order to keep your blood pH balanced.

Mild Acidosis Causes:

  • Joint pain, aching muscles and lactic acid buildup
  • Cardiovascular damage
  • Weight gain, obesity and diabetes
  • Bladder and kidney conditions, including kidney stones
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Premature aging
  • Gout
  • Osteoporosis; weak, brittle bones, hip fractures and bone spurs
  • Low energy and chronic fatigue
  • Slow digestion and elimination
  • Yeast/fungal overgrowth

Severe Acidosis Causes:

  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Cancer
The foods you ingest are either acid or alkaline. Vegetables and fruits are the highest in alkalinity, especially dark leafy greens. To get an idea of what foods are acid and alkaline just Google search acid/alkaline food chart and many sites will come up.

Suggestions To Keep You Balanced
:

  • 60% of your daily diet to consist of organic vegetables, especially dark leafy greens
  • Green powder - NanoGreens (BioPharma Scientific), Vitamineral Green (Healthforce Nutritionals), or Miracle Greens (Macro Greens). Because soils are depleted and you need 5 times what my grandparents ate to obtain the same nutrient value everyone needs a green supplement as most will not get to the 60% daily intake of vegetables.

  • Breathing exercises
  • Filtered water

Liberation Treatment For Multiple Sclerosis

There is a new discovery to what might be causing multiple sclerosis (MS). Dr. Paolo Zamboni, a former vascular surgeon and professor at the University of Ferrara in northern Italy has found higher iron levels in the brain clustered around the veins that drain blood from the head. The iron deposits have caused narrowing or blockages to blood flow to the brain. Zamboni dubbed the vein disorder CCSVI, or Chronic Cerebrospinal Venous Insufficiency.

His solution - a surgical treatment known as Liberation Treatment (like standard angiography but performed on the veins in the neck). Zamboni emphasizes that the Liberation Treatment does not make people in wheelchairs walk again. Rather, it seems to stop the development of further MS attacks, and in some cases, improves movement and decreases the debilitating fatigue that are the hallmarks of MS.

Even though the US and Canada are very skeptical about this finding and procedure I feel it is very viable to consider, especially for those that are more progressed. This can be a possible solution to halt the progression and eliminate some of the debilitating symptoms.

Dr. Zamboni doesn’t exactly know why those with MS have this excess iron. I feel it has to do with lifestyle habits that create infection and inflammation in the body. Just as arteries in the heart get clogged so can the veins if poor nutrition, lack of exercise, excess heavy metal exposure, and stress are not neutralized.

November Newsletter 2009 Acid Reflux

March 25th, 2010
Acid Reflux/GERD/Heartburn

How pharmaceutical companies are cashing in on you
when there is an easy fix

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux is a condition in which food or liquid travels backwards from the stomach to the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach). This action can irritate the esophagus causing symptoms.

Symptoms of GERD:

  • Heartburn
  • Burping
  • Pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen
  • Burning up your esophagus
  • Fullness in the stomach
  • Nausea after eating
  • Chest pain
  • Vomiting

GERD is one of the most common complaints today and it is a sure bet that you are taking one of the top selling medications, Tagament, Pepcid, Zantac, Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium or Protonix to shut down stomach acid production.
Unfortunately these medications are causing you more harm than good.

The medications listed above reduce the amount of HCl (hydrochloric acid) in your stomach, which is your body’s first immunological barrier to protect you gastrointestinal tract (GI), thereby leaving you more vulnerable to infections such as candida, parasites, and bacteria. Also the longer you take these medications you increase your risk of stomach cancer. The only time the medications would have a short-lived use is if someone actually had an ulcer. In these cases stomach acid causes damage to the stomach lining and the medication would help offset this damage. See below for natural remedies.

For 90% of you the reason you are having heartburn is because you are lacking HCl, which the stomach normally produces but can diminish with aging, poor diet, and genetics. When lacking, you are not able to fully break down your proteins and they putrefy. Your undigested proteins are the cause your heartburn and other symptoms. Yes this is the opposite of what you have been told. You actually need more HCl versus taking a drug to stop the production of it.

An easy test you can do at home to see if you need more HCl. Put 1 tablespoon of raw unpasteurized apple cider vinegar into 8 ounces of water and drink right before eating a meal and notice if your symptoms are worse or better. If symptoms abate then you need a digestive enzyme with HCl and pepsin. If symptoms are worse then you need to check to make sure you don’t have an ulcer or Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria that can inhabit various areas of the stomach and duodenum. It causes a chronic low-level inflammation of the stomach lining and is strongly linked to the development of duodenal and gastric ulcers and stomach cancer. Over 80% of individuals infected with the bacterium are asymptomatic.

Suggestions to Rid Acid Reflux:

  • Instead of eating large meals, eat small meals more frequently
  • Take a digestive enzyme as you begin your meal that has HCl and pepsin. Solaray HCl with Pepsin is a good brand on vitacost.com
  • Avoid caffeine-containing foods and beverages (coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate)
  • Avoid foods that decrease lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure (peppermint, fatty or fried foods, alcohol)
  • Avoid acidic foods that may irritate the esophagus (spicy foods, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, tomato sauce)

Natural Acid Reflux/Heartburn Remedies for Times of Acute Flare Ups:

  • DGL Chewable tablets - deglycyrrhized licorice heals the lining of the stomach and esophagus
  • 1/2 tsp of alumumium-free baking soda in 8 oz of water - mix well

Suggestions for Ulcers:

  • 1/2 head of organic green cabbage - put through a juicer. Do this 2x/day on empty stomach for 3 days
  • Glutagenics by Metagenics - 1 tsp 3x/day in 8 ounces of water on empty stomach

Suggestions for H. Pylori Infection:

  • H. Pylori Infection - Gastro ULC (K29)- 2 capsules 3x/day with food along with H-PLR (K32) - 2 capsules 3x/day with food. Order both products from Apex Energetics. Call 800-736-4381 and set up account using P2017. Do this regime for 2 months.

Smoothie Recipe

Looking for a healthy treat that won’t feed candida. See below.

  • 8-10 ounces of unsweetened vanilla almond milk (Pacific Natural Foods)
  • 1-2 scoops of Vitol egg white protein powder, or Nutri Biotic rice powder or Living Harvest unsweetened hemp powder
  • 1 tbsp raw organic almond butter
  • 1 tsp organic coconut butter (Artisana)
  • Handful of berries (not dried cranberries). Banana is ok if you are not doing the candida diet
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Ice if desired

Mix in a blender :)

October Newsletter 2009 Hypothyroidism

March 25th, 2010

Hypothyroidism

FDA Stops Production Of Armour Thyroid

The American Association for Health Freedom learned that Time-Cap Labs, producer of a generic version of the brand name drug Armour, a natural and bioidentical thyroid replacement, has been ordered by the FDA to stop production. The FDA has decided to classify the company’s product, available for over a century, as an unapproved new drug. Since the new drug approval process is prohibitively expensive for a non-patentable substance, the FDA is in effect banning the natural product. The purpose? Presumably to protect the profits of other, inferior drugs that have been FDA approved.

According to statistics by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and other medical organizations, approximately twenty-seven million Americans have a thyroid disorder. Thyroid consumer advocate Mary Shomon projects that 2 million of these patients take either Armour Thyroid or a generic equivalent.

Armour and other “whole” natural thyroid preparations (including Westhroid and Nathroid as well as Time-Cap Lab’s Thyroid) are bio-identical, complete hormone preparations, containing “T4″ “T3″ “T2″ and “T1″ in the same proportions made by the human thyroid.

The FDA approved preparations Synthroid (T4), Cytomel (T3), and Levethyroxine (T4) include bio-identical molecules, but are not complete or totally bio-identical as they do not contain “T2″ or “T1″.  It’s no wonder so many people feel much better with the balanced natural products that have been available for generations.

What Is Your Thyroid’s Function?

  • The thyroid is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body. This gland is found in the neck inferior to (below) the thyroid cartilage (also known as the Adam’s apple in men) and at approximately the same level as the cricoid cartilage. The thyroid controls how quickly the body burns energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body should be to other hormones.

Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight
  • Coarse, dry hair
  • Dry, rough pale skin
  • Hair loss
  • Cold intolerance
  • Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Memory loss
  • Abnormal menstrual cycles
  • Decreased libido

Disruptors Of Thyroid Function:

  • Heavy metal accumulation (cadmium, mercury, lead, pesticides/herbicides)

  • Candida overgrowth

  • Lack of minerals (iodine, selenium, magnesium, zinc)

  • Poor diet (sugar and caffeine)

  • Stress (adrenal exhaustion)

  • Excess soy (tofu, soy protein isolate, soy milk)

  • Gluten intolerance or celiac disease

Suggestions For Hypothyroid:

  • Eat mineral rich foods high in iodine and selenium (seaweeds, cod and other seafood, Brazil nuts, avocado, eggs).
  • Thyrozyme or Thyroid abX by Apex Energetics (1-800-736-4381 - set up a patient account using the number P2017) are powerful vitamin/herbal formulations for hypothyroid. Thyroid abX would be recommended for autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto’s disease. It is not advisable to take either of the above supplements if are already taking Armour thyroid. Take one or the other.
  • Add in a green powder supplement such as Macro Greens - Miracle Greens or Green Vibrance.
  • Candida detox for 90 days - read Ann’s book The Candida Cure.
  • Consider doing a heavy metal detox. Natural Cellular Defense are zeolite drops that will clear heavy metals from the body but do not leach minerals out. Purchase 4 bottles and work up slowly to 10 drops 3x/day in water.
  • Exercise - 3-5 times a week 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise.

Breakfast Recipe

Many of my clients struggle with wanting a tasty breakfast yet have
so little time in the morning. Below is a recipe that takes 5 minutes to make and tastes delicious. Enjoy :)

2 eggs (organic, antibiotic and hormone-free)
Handful of rinsed spinach or arugula (organic)
1-2 tbsp Basiltops Dairy-Free Pesto (www.basiltops.com)
1/4 cup of cooked quinoa*
Extra virgin olive oil or unsalted organic butter

*Make a batch of quinoa on Sunday to last for the week. 4 cups of water to 2 cups of quinoa (rinse well before boiling). Put rinsed quinoa in water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer the quinoa for 15-20 minutes.

Put a few drops of olive oil or a sliver of butter in a frying pan. Keep flame on low. Combine all ingredients above stirring frequently to scramble the eggs into the rest of the mixture. Add a little sea salt and fresh ground pepper.

Cold & Flu Season
Flu Shots - Yes or No?

Two days ago I was sad to hear Obama alert the US of a swine flu increase as we approach cold and flu season. What is this setting the stage for…you guessed it…a swine flu vaccination. There is talk about the swine flu vaccination even becoming mandatory. I can not stress enough for each of you to do your homework before you ever get vaccinated.

What is in a Vaccination?

  • Live and dead viruses
  • Thimerosal: mercury derivative (does contain mercury.) Extremely dangerous preservative. Made from a combination of Ethylene Glycol (antifreeze) and ethanol, thiosalicylic acid, sodium hydroxide and ethyl mercuric chloride. These chemicals are neurotoxic, dangerous, fatal and easily cause brain and liver damages.
  • Formaldehyde: A neurotoxin and carcinogen (effects the nervous system and known to cause cancer.) May cause insomnia, coughing, headaches, nausea, nosebleeds, and skin rashes. Commonly known to embalm corpses. It has been said that there is no safe level of formaldehyde to be ingested into the body.
  • Aluminum: toxic, cancerous.

One of the greatest risks from having a flu shot is a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine. GBS attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal.

Tim O’Shea, author of The Sanctity of Human Blood will educate you on the truth about vaccinations.

The key to warding off viruses is to keep your immune system strong. Remember that antibiotics are not effective for killing a virus; they are for bacterial infections. Taking unnecessary antibiotics leads to candida overgrowth only weakening your immune system.

Suggestions to Ward Off and Conquer a Cold or Flu:

  • Colloidal Silver - the best natural antibiotic and antimicrobial fighter. Silver 100.com is brand I recommend.
  • Red Clover tea - a blood cleanser. Best source is from Pacific Botanicals. Purchase 1 lb. of “red clover dried herb.” 1 tsp of herb per 8 oz. cup of boiled water. Steep in a French Press for 15 minutes. Slowly work up to 4 cups a day as it is detoxifying to the body.
  • Wellness Formula by Source Naturals - an herbal/vitamin supplement that contains echinacea, olive leaf, astragalus, zinc, and many other ingredients.
  • Vitamin C and L-Lysine - a great combo to knock out any infection, especially viruses. 1,000 mg 3x/day is a good maintenance dose during the winter season. When fighting a viral infection double or triple your vitamin C dosage and take L-Lysine 2,000 mg - 2x/day.
  • Olive Leaf - a viral fighter.
  • Garlic - an antimicrobial. Mince one clove daily into your food or take allicin (garlic’s main active component) in a supplement form.
  • Eat a healthy diet - lean proteins (fish, turkey, chicken),
vegetables (particularly dark leafy greens), small amounts of raw nuts/seeds (no peanuts or cashews), small amounts of legumes, small amounts of gluten-free whole grains. Stay off alcohol, sugars, dairy products, hydrogenated fats, and refined carbohydrates when you are sick.

I’m very excited to share the news that
Healing Multiple Sclerosis has now been translated into Italian and available through the publisher, Edizioni Il Punto D’Incontro
.

Food Inc. - The Movie

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government’s regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won’t go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli-the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

I know most of you say there is no way I can stomach watching a movie like this but I’m strongly encouraging that educate yourself, your family, and your neighbors about what is really happening to our food supply. By knowing what is really going on you can make better choices and make a difference!

August Newsletter 2009 Weight Loss

March 25th, 2010

Weight Loss

Summer is here and we want to fit into our lighter wardrobe and bathing suits (if we even dare to put one on).

Being at your ideal weight has much greater benefits than just looking good. Keeping fit reduces your chances of having diabetes (1 out of 2 children born after 1980, and 1 out of 3 adults will suffer with type II diabetes in the U.S.), cardiovascular ailments, and other chronic diseases.

Say the word “diet” and women in particular will say, “Not again, I’ve tried everything. Just give me a pill.” I wish it were that simple. The key to losing weight is to make a lifestyle and attitude change about food, weight, and pleasure. Food is about fuel to give you energy, not to pacify your fears, sorrows, anger, and anxiety. Sure there are those times that your mood dictates nothing less than eating your favorite dessert. But that doesn’t mean to make it a habit.

One reason why people who are already overweight and continue to crave more junk food and larger quantities is because the body is desperately malnourished, desiring healthy foods to help it run properly, not junk food that depletes and disrupts the body.

Eating is also a time of bonding and enjoying social situations, but that doesn’t mean eating healthy foods can’t be pleasurable and satisfying. We all want quality aging and one of the main ways to accomplish this is to eat  healthy, organic, antibiotic-hormone free foods. You are what you eat.
Trash in = trash out over time.

Tips on How to Lose Weight and Stay fit:

  • Eat a healthy diet - lean proteins (fish, turkey, chicken),
vegetables (particularly dark leafy greens), small amounts of raw nuts/seeds (no peanuts or cashews), small amounts of gluten-free whole grains. Stay off alcohol, sugars, dairy products, hydrogenated fats, and refined carbohydrates.

  • Even reduce or eliminate whole grains and beans/legumes until you achieve the weight you desire. If you do incorporate some grains stick with wild rice and quinoa and have them at breakfast and/or lunch.
  • Finish your dinner by 6 p.m. and make sure there are no carbohydrates, just protein and vegetables.
  • Cut down on portions - smaller meals and snacking in between will keep your metabolism running optimally.
  • Eat a few slices of turkey later at night if you get a sugar/carbohydrate cravings.
  • Eat grapefruit daily to help speed up metabolism.
  • Do the candida program for 3 months as this is truly the key for those that can’t lose weight even if they are eating correctly and exercising. The Candida Cure book will walk you through the program.
  • Exercise - cardiovascular exercise for 30 minutes four to five times a week.
  • Get 6 to 8 hours of quality sleep.
  • Make sure your thyroid levels are in normal range on your blood work. A sluggish thyroid is indicated by weight gain, trouble losing weight, fatigue, depression, outer third of eyebrows missing, constipation, hair loss, memory loss, low libido, and skin issues.
  • Think of food as fuel not an emotional pacifier. Find other outlets to nurture yourself - journal, massage, scream in your pillow, exercise, weekly healing therapy of some sort, engage in your favorite hobby.
  • Think of your eating program as reward and removing infection and inflammation from the body vs. deprivation.
  • Keep a 80-20% eating plan once you are at your desired weight. 80% of your meals and snacks are to be healthy each week. 20% or once to twice a week is the margin to indulge in your “no-no” foods such as ice cream, alcohol, pizza, etc.

July Newsletter 2009 High Cholesterol

March 25th, 2010

High Cholesterol

Say the word “high cholesterol” and discover how common it is that someone you know or even yourself is on a statin drug such as Lipitor, Pravachol, Zocar, and Bayco. Why? Cholesterol drugs equate to big bucks for pharmaceutical companies. Beware though as these seemingly innocuous drugs come with side effects such as muscle pain and weakness, neuropathy, and memory loss. Statin drugs shut off the production of CoQ10 by the liver, which is involved in the energy production of every cell, even the heart muscle. Bayco was removed from the market because several people died from several muscle disease caused by the drug.

Isn’t there an easier and healthier way to keep cholesterol levels balanced? Yes, but let’s first dispel the myth around what cholesterol is and isn’t.

Cholesterol is not a bad word and essential for you to function. Cholesterol is a group of lipids (fats) that is made by the liver. It is found in every cell of the body. The body uses cholesterol in the production of cell membranes, which allows cell communication to function properly; the precursor for the sex hormones; required for the formation of bile salts that help fat digestion; and for producing vitamin D. Your body makes 80% of cholesterol and the rest comes from your diet (eggs, meat, butter, cheese).

What do the numbers on your blood work actually mean? Total cholesterol being over 200 doesn’t mean your clogging arteries and should run to be on a statin drug. The wake up call would be when not only when your total cholesterol is too high, but also when LDL and triglycerides are elevated, and your cholesterol ratio is above normal range. Having all of the values off is a sign of oxidized cholesterol. Cholesterol that has been damaged by free radical stress is called oxidized cholesterol and will stick to the linings of your blood vessels, which over time will clog arteries. Where are the free radical reactions coming from? Stress overload, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, candida overgrowth, and a poor diet (refined carbohydrates, trans fats, and sugar).

Tips on how to balance out and maintain healthy cholesterol levels:

  • Exercise - cardiovascular exercise for 30 minutes four to five times a week.
  • Eat a healthy diet - lean proteins (fish, turkey, chicken), raw nuts/seeds, vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens. Stay off alcohol, sugars, hydrogenated fats, and refined carbohydrates.
  • Get 6 to 8 hours of quality sleep.
  • If blood work results are all out of balance do Ann’s 90-Day Candida cure program and take NSI Red Yeast Rice + CoQ10 with No-Flush Niacin from vitacost.com

Important: If you are on a statin drug add in CoQ10 200 mg once a day from Jarrow on vitacost.com to replenish what the drug is depleting.

Interesting side note: A.V. Costantini, MD, who worked with the World Health Organization, said that statin drugs were actually antifungual drugs labeled differently. Therefore high cholesterol is basically a systemic fungal infection for which a candida diet, herbal antifungal, and exercise can turn this condition around.

June Newsletter 2009 - Depression & Anxiety

March 25th, 2010

Depression & Anxiety

Depression and anxiety have escalated greatly with economic and global strife. More than ever before people are on stress overload. When stress is not neutralized sufficiently one becomes overwhelmed and can slip into depression and anxiety. What brings on stress overload: poor diet, lack of sleep and exercise, psychological stress (divorce, death, economic hardship, illness), and environmental toxicity.

Signs of anxiety:

  • Worrisome and obsessive thoughts
  • Insomnia
  • Restlessness
  • Being on edge
  • Fatigue
  • Easily Distracted
  • Stomach knots
  • Diarrhea
  • Impatient/Irritable
  • Shortness of breath

Signs of depression:

  • Apathetic
  • Sad/Down
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of interest in normal activities
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Hopeless
  • Difficulty starting tasks
  • Unfocused
  • Crying spells
  • Excessive sleep
  • Thoughts of suicide

Tips on how to conquer anxiety:

  • Lack of oxygen can make body feel speedy and anxious. No lazy breathing. Inhale and exhale from the belly. Chest breathing equates to lazy breathing.

  • Fear erupts from a past event or anxiety from fearing a future event.  Stay in the NOW moment, this is your point of power.
  • Identify, accept, and give yourself permission to release fear and anxiety by talking out loud. This important action step to dispel anxiety works. Trying to pretend or push away anxious thoughts will only create more resistance and make them stronger. By acknowledging anxious thoughts right away you have removed 50% of that fear. Next, give yourself permission to release those thoughts by telling them “to go play outside” or “that was then and this is now and I’m choosing to move forward.” Next, replace those anxious thoughts with positive thoughts or take a physical action by taking a deep breath, a short walk, call a friend, etc.

  • For panic attacks - exhale all air from diaphragm and at the end of the exhale push the word “huh” 3 times forcing panic and your breath out.  Follow with deep full breath. Repeat until calm. Also rub or press into socket area below collarbone, next to rotator cuff, an acupressure point that opens up the lungs to be able to take a full breath.

  • Cut out caffeine (coffee, black tea, red bulls, chocolate, even green tea past 4 p.m.). Your sympathetic nervous system is on overload when you are anxious so you don’t need to over stimulate it with more caffeine.

  • Make sure your diet is healthy with lean proteins such as fish, turkey, and chicken. Eat a variety of vegetables, minimal fruits, nuts/seeds, and whole grains. Avoid refined sugar treats, alcohol, fast food, white flours, and artificial items such as diet drinks.

  • To combat stress take Vitamin C, a buffered source (American Health Ester C, 1,000 mg.) with each meal. Also take a B complex at breakfast and lunch. B-Right (Jarrow) is a good brand on vitacost.com. These two vitamins are critical for optimal adrenal function, which plays a large part in managing your stress levels, increasing energy, and reduce anxiety attacks.

  • For chronic anxiety take Adrenal abX and/or Adrena Calm cream (Apex Energetics 800-736-4381 set up a account using P2017). Adrenal abX gives extra support to your adrenals and endocrine system. Adrena Calm cream helps to restore your circadian rhythm so that you wind down at night versus wind up.

  • Intesol (Metagenics - go to the store button on Ann Boroch’s website and register on the online store). This formula helps with uncomfortable stomach and intestinal distress when under anxiety. It has chamomile, peppermint, and lavender oils in to rid the body of spasms, cramps, etc.

  • Supplement with products such as Gabatone (Apex Energetics 800-736-4381 set up a account using P2017) or Calm (Olympian Labs) on vitacost.com. Both supplements have gaba and other amino acids and herbs to calm your mind and your body. *Note: Do not take if you are on anti anxiety/depressant pharmaceuticals.

  • Take 1,500 mg of a free form amino acid complex - Super Daily Amino Acid Blend (Carlson 750 mg capsules) to feed your body the precursors that make neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin.

  • Exercise in the morning or afternoon. Exercise is a great way to neutralize stress and help with the natural circadian rhythm of your body wanting to fall asleep at night. If you exercise too late in the evening though, it could keep you up.

Tips on how to alleviate depression:

  • Take 1,500 mg of a free form amino acid complex Super Daily Amino Acid Blend (Carlson 750 mg capsules) to feed your body the precursors that make neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin.

  • Try St. John’s Wort (Gaia Herbs liquid phytocapsules) on vitacost.com or Seratone or Dopatone (Apex Energetics 800-736-4381 set up a account using P2017). These formulas lift depression and help with emotional clarity. *Note: Do not take if you are on anti anxiety/depressant pharmaceuticals.

  • Get into nature at least twenty minutes a day and walk. Sun, nature, and oxygen will help elevate your mood.

  • Take baby steps. When depressed you feel overwhelmed and unmotivated to do anything. Make it your goal to just get one thing done that day; get up and take a walk, take a shower, eat a healthy meal, finish a task for work, etc.

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Seeing a healthcare professional does not mean you are weak. We all need help during challenging times. Choose someone that feels good to you and helps you move forward.

Note: Save yourself money by purchasing supplements on vitacost.com. or iherb.com. Both are Internet companies that sell over 400 products (brands you find in Whole Foods) for 30-50% because they move volume.
