Is Candida an Issue for You?
Tired . . . can’t sleep. . . anxious or depressed? Can’t think straight from brain fog? Suffering with gas, bloating, or acid reflux? And the list goes on. The most grossly ignored infection in the world is candida overgrowth. Chances are, it could be one of the causes behind minor or major health problems you are experiencing. You might be thinking, “This doesn’t apply to me” or “I’m not a woman, and yeast is a woman’s issue.” That’s simply not the case. Candida is epidemic in the United States and can affect anyone. We can experience a mild or moderate case of candida—with bothersome (or embarrassing) symptoms that slow us down—or a severe case, where it causes inflammation and contributes to autoimmune disease or cancer. Many people bear uncomfortable conditions for years because they don’t think there is anything they can do about them. But there is.
What Is Candida?
Candida is yeast and fungus. Yeast is a single-celled ubiquitous organism that naturally lives everywhere inside and outside the body and stays balanced until we upset that balance. The common disruptors of this balance are antibiotics, steroids, birth-control pills, hormone replacement, chemotherapy, radiation, vaccinations, heavy metals, stress, sugar, and alcohol. Just one dose of antibiotics in your lifetime can begin a vicious cycle of yeast overgrowth and infection.
Here’s how it works. Let’s say you are seven years old and you have an ear infection. The doctor gives you antibiotics. The antibiotics wipe out both good and bad bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract because they cannot distinguish between the two. Without enough good bacteria, candida (yeast) begins to multiply. Yeast produces 79 toxic by-products, which weaken your immune system and cause you to fall ill again with the same reoccurring infection or a new one in a different part of your body. The doctor gives you more antibiotics, which wipe out more good bacteria, continuing to weaken your immune system even more. Eventually yeast turns into fungus (mycelia root forms) and can migrate to the bloodstream by poking pinholes into the intestinal lining (leaky gut), disrupting communication in the body and attacking tissues and organs. So what begins as harmless yeast can ultimately become pathogenic fungus.
Foods That Feed Candida
Among the causes of candida overgrowth identified above, sugar is the biggest offender. It continues to feed yeast and fungus throughout a lifetime causing dysbiosis (an imbalance of good to bad bacteria) and inflammation. Foods such as cookies, chocolate, pizza, pasta, pastries, lattes, milk, cheese, wine, beer, and bread turn into sugar rapidly and feed yeast as well as parasites, viruses, and bacteria.
A Range of Symptoms and Conditions
Minor symptoms of candida overgrowth can be gas, bloating, heartburn, fatigue, weight gain, depression, anxiety, sinusitis, constipation, and diarrhea. Severe cases can lead to more serious conditions such as autoimmune diseases and cancer. Click on the candida chart to learn which symptoms and conditions are directly or indirectly caused by yeast overgrowth.
The Candida Questionnaire—How Do You Score?
Take the Candida Questionnaire and see how you score. (Note: Even when our score is low, because of stress, modern diets, and common medical treatments, yeast can still be an issue for many of us.)
Where Do I Begin?
To get candida under control, you can start by making dietary changes to avoid inflammatory foods and integrating supplementation. Many people have had success with my step-by-step program of being on a candida diet and adding specific supplementation to detoxify and repair the body for 90 days. In my practice, I create an individualized program tailored to each client and I would be happy to work with you. You can also read my book The Candida Cure, where I share my 90-day program for controlling candida and provide recipes and recommended products. If you are experiencing more severe issues with candida, including autoimmune conditions, chronic conditions, or cancer, I invite you to read my book Healing Multiple Sclerosis and/or contact me to set up an appointment.
